Child migration poses a serious ethical dilemma, and political communities face the difficult decision between exercising their right to enforce stricter border controls and the need to protect the basic human rights of children seeking asylum. America’s right to exclude unwanted refugees has resulted in morally unacceptable border controls that subject children to the trauma and unspeakable suffering. The solution to the ethical problem (America’s right to decide who is permitted within its borders versus peoples’ right to movement and self-determination) is to press action on the underlying causes that force children to migrate from their homes.
