The election process in Canada starts with the dissolution of parliament, which takes place when the Governor General at the request of the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister then calls for a fresh election, which usually takes place at the end of the five year term of the sitting parliament from the previous election. This is then followed by the risk of the election and it takes place through the Chief Electoral Officer who notifies the Returning Officers. The Chief Electoral Officer is the head of Elections Canada, a body mandated with conducting Canadian federal elections and referendums. The CEO has to then issue to the returning officers the Writs of the election. This is a government document ordering an election or a by-election. After the issuance of the writs, it is important that elections are held in at least 36 days.
