Can laws influence chronic illness
Using the assigned readings, information from the literature, and the following article (Meetoo, D. (2010). The imperative of human obesity: An ethical reflection. British Journal of Nursing, 19(9), 563-568.) compose a response to the following: The author describes the role of global economic development and its influence on the increased incidence of chronic illness. Ethical pros and cons of "abolishing obesogenic environments to prevent pandemic chronic diseases" are offered. Respond to the following in your initial post and give support, reasoning, or evidence behind your position: 1.Reflect on the recommendation to enact laws with the intent to decrease obesity rates and subsequent chronic illness. How does this compare to the legislation that addressed smoking rates and its attempt to decrease the incidence of smoking related chronic disease? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Is it realistic to consider that, left unchecked, obesity will overcome smoking as the leading cause of preventable death? 2.What are the ethical pros and cons of allowing individuals to live their lives of their own choosing even when it results in an increasing chronic illness burden to society? While the conceptual legal framework of using the law to control elements of the public health has not been fully utilized, reducing deaths caused by smoking have been a great success. It is important to point out that smoking still does have a significant part to play on the number of persons that die from complication related.
Reflecting on the use of the same approach on chronic diseases such as obesity and cardiovascular diseases, it is certainly possible to succeed (Pillitteri, 2014). While some of the studies suggest that obesity is as a result of genetic inherent from the family tree, it is also true that majority of the persons that are obese have eating disorders. There have been sharp division on the issue and some of the experts have come out indicating that, parents with obese kids should be prosecuted for child abuse, among them Murtagh, Ludwig and Katie Hopkins. The same case applies to heart complications that are as a result lifestyle habits. Most of the chronic diseases leading in the mortality ratings are lifestyle associated rather than genetic. As such, much like smoking and alcohol consumption, these diseases can also be controlled using policies (Hinkle & Cheever, 2013).
