Mindfulness teaches individuals to focus on the present and become aware of their feelings and emotions. As people free themselves from their feelings, they are in a better position to escape from their depressive states. Through mindfulness meditation, individuals can regulate their emotions. Emotional regulation entails a set of processes through which individuals can regulate their emotions. In the process, people can either mitigate, enhance, or maintain the stability of an emotion (Grecucci et al., 2015). Depending on how people Mindfulness meditation skills enable individuals to accept emotional states and hence enhancing current awareness.
Coping with stress
Psychological distress has been associated with the inability to control or avoid negative thoughts. Keng, Smoski & Robins (2011) demonstrate that mindfulness is critical to the cultivation of facilities needed for psychological functioning. Stress comes about when individuals immerse themselves in negative thoughts. With mindfulness, the article indicates that individuals experience a lower frequency of negative automatic thoughts. This, in turn, enhances the ability to let go the negative thoughts (Keng, Smoski & Robins, 2011). Furthermore, the ability to focus on particular thoughts eliminates the need to spend more energy on negative thoughts (Keng, Smoski & Robins, 2011).
