Assignment 1: U.S. Healthcare: From Then to Now

Essay Instructions:
Background Early roots of the current hospital system can be traced back to the 1800s with the development of almshouses, which were developed to serve primarily the poor population. Since then, major milestones and accomplishments have been instrumental in forming today's system. These major milestones are divided into four sectors and, according to Niles, the milestones for each provide an introduction as to how each sector has evolved to form part of the U.S. healthcare system. Your required readings categorize the milestones in the healthcare system into these four sectors: The history of practicing medicine and the development of medical education The development of the hospital system The history of public health The history of health insurance For your assignment Part A Select one of the four milestone sectors. From that sector, select one major milestone. For example, from the Medicine and Education milestone, you might select the year 1904, when the AMA created the Council on Medical Education to establish standards for medical education. Or, from the Public Health milestone, you might select the year 1923, when the vaccine for diphtheria and whooping cough was developed. Once your milestone has been selected: Describe the milestone in detail. Cite circumstances/issues that lead to its creation. Cite resources to describe the milestone. Describe the resulting impact of the healthcare issue it was developed to address. Part B Then, select a milestone from two other sectors that occurred around the same point in time. For instance, the Medicine and Education milestone example occurred in 1904. So, you would select a milestone from two different sectors that occurred around the same time in history; in this case, 1904. Part C Describe how the three (3) milestones intersect, enhance, or supplement each other. Your paper must be 1000–1200 words. Reference either material in the book or an external source to support your point. Do not forget to cite your sources. Please ensure that each paragraph includes proper capitalization, grammar, and punctuation. Format Students should use the following format for their written assignment: Use APA format and cite sources, as necessary. Use double spaces. Use professional, objective language. US Healthcare: From Then to Now Name of the Student Institutional Affiliation Course Code and Course Name Professor Date of Submission US Healthcare: From Then to Now Introduction In the evolution process of the health care system in the United States, there have been specific crucial points that the United States history has witnessed. This paper explores three pivotal events that occurred around the early 1900s: the “American Medical Association (AMA)” setting up of the “Council on Medical Education” in 1904; the “U.S. Public Health Service (PHS)” coming into being in 1902; and the launching of the Blue Cross health insurance scheme in 1929. They were important milestones that helped with medical school learning, health-related causes, and approachability to medical facilities. These interrelated processes are recognized, and each segment is outlined in its role in advancing healthcare in the United States and developing the current healthcare system. Part A The Creation of the Council on Medical Education by the AMA in 1904 In 1904, when the AMA established the “Council on Medical Education”, it marked a landmark event in America's medical education history. The new outcomes that challenged the quality of medical education and the lack of standards for training physicians provoked the creation of this Council. Before that, there was no consistency in curricula, and few schools adequately prepared the next generation of medical personnel (Niles, 2021). The following are some of the situations that compelled the creation of the council on medical education. The number of medical schools in the US rose at a relatively tremendous rate during the last decades of the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, many centers were poorly regulated and provided a poor education. This realization was not helpful for the profession or the population's well-being, leading the AMA to act. After the Flexner Report in 1910, the “Council on Medical Education” was set up, which indicated the inadequacies of many medical schools and suggested changes in their functioning system (Niles, 2021). The Council planned to establish educational standards, enhance medical education, and guarantee that physicians were equipped to address the existing healthcare indispensable for the populace. This essay also examines the role of the “Council on Medical Education” in shaping the healthcare system. In setting these standards for medical education, the AMA played a significant role in raising the bar in the training of physicians; this gave ...
