Overview: The purpose of this assignment is to research, evaluate, and understand valid, reliable, fair, and appropriate assessment tools used in schools to screen, diagnose, and measure student academic achievement. There are 2 Assessment Evaluation assignments in the course, each with a different focus. They are:

1. LITERACY FOCUS, which all candidates complete (Assessment Evaluation 1 – Reading)



2. CONTENT FOCUS*, which is specific to your degree program.

*Assessment Evaluation 2 – (Behavioral, Remediation, or Intervention)



• School counselor candidates will complete an intervention evaluation with a focus on behavior.



Note: Be sure to complete the correct focus area for Assessment Evaluation 2.

Since education assessment instruments are costly and not listed in the course materials, this assignment consists of researching and evaluating assessment instruments. If your school has any education kit(s) discussed in this assignment, you are permitted to review the testing materials on your own, however, this is not required. A citation would be included on the reference page.



Specific Guidelines for the Assessment Evaluations



Step 1 – Research

1. Select 4 instruments from the Approved Assessment Instruments List. (See separate document.)

2. Using Buros Mental Measurements, examine 4 measurement studies or measurement reviews about the existing measures from the Approved Assessment Instruments List. There should be 4 assessments reviewed for both Assessment Evaluation assignments (8 total).

3. Critically analyze the measures, addressing strengths and weaknesses. There is a data collection template provided to ease the process of collecting information. Each section of the template should be well-developed and written in complete sentences. The template is submitted with the assignment. Each critical analysis should include the following:

• A Summary of the assessment instrument with clear, specific information unique to the instrument, including the population who could be tested with the instrument.

• An analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the measure. There must be a minimum of 2 reasons to support each one.

• Justification for why the measurement would be an appropriate measure for different populations.

4. Repeat #3 for each of the 4 instruments.

5. Use a separate data collection template for each instrument. Save each as a Microsoft Word document labeled: instrumentname.doc

NOTE: When submitting the evaluation, these separate templates must be compiled, along with all other items, into 1 Word document.

6. Other resources for research are listed in the syllabus and may be used in addition to Buros. If using the testing instrument manual, list it in the references. Buros is directly accessible through the JLF library database for your convenience.



Step 2 – Written Report

1. Organize and format each assessment instrument with the headings and subheadings outlined below. Do not write the questions or statements from the data collection template. Write in well-formed paragraphs that flow logically from one topic to the next.

2. Each instrument review should contain a minimum of 2 pages of content, including the data collection template, in addition to the cover page and reference page. Format the paper in current APA. The data collection template will be used as a chart in the report at the end of each instrument review.



The candidate will complete 2 separate assessment evaluations based on current assessment instruments used for diagnostic, intervention, and behavioral evaluations in school settings. The first assessment evaluation will focus on reading/writing. The second evaluation will focus on behavioral, reading, or intervention. The second assessment evaluation’s focus will depend on the candidate’s major. Each evaluation will include 3 components: a review of 4 testing instruments, support and/or review from Buros Mental Measurement database for each instrument, and a reflection and application to current school settings. Each evaluation should be formatted in current APA, contain a minimum of 8 pages of content (2 pages per instrument review), and include cover and reference pages.

Evaluation as learning encompasses a process where students develop responsiveness of how they learn and use the awareness to improve their knowledge and taking an improved responsibility for their learning. Assessment for learning entails a process where evaluation helps tutors develop insights on the level of student understanding hence device a plan and guide of instructions as well as deliver valuable responses to the learners. On the other hand, assessment of learning is a process where evaluation enlightens there major academic stakeholders such as teachers, students and parents of the accomplishment of academics at a given period to celebrate success, pan interventions and support continued progress. Diagnostic assessment of reading
Reading is a crucial component in our day-to-day life. When student struggle to read, teachers can be more effective only if they understand the strengths and weaknesses each student face. Diagnostic assessment of reading is a strategy for evaluation of reading used to assess learners learning and language relative weakness and strengths. The approach allows the teachers to pinpoint student’s key areas of weakness and help them understand the steps they require for improvement. Commonly the approach is used to provide an analysis of a learner reading proficiency, offer tutors with diagnostic information to plan individual or group reading the instruction as well as diagnose the causes of learning difficulties.
Diagnostic assessment of reading is used to measure print awareness, word recognition, oral reading, spelling, letter and sounds, word analysis, silent reading comprehension, word meaning, and phonological awareness. The tool evaluates individual student achievement of the age of 3-18 years several components of reading and language. Diagnostic assessment of reading is an essential tool that not only provide an all-inclusive assessment of student’s strengths and weakness in reading but also informs instructional interventions. In addition, it offers diagnostic information through the use of the tests such as reading comprehension, silent reading, oral reading, word analysis, letters and sounds, phonological awareness, print awareness, spelling and word meaning. The assessment offers essential skills that form the foundation for future reading success.

Transition planning inventory is an assessment tool that helps instructors address student’s transition needs as outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004.
