Summary of the article
The article "Why is the subject of leadership complex in Africa?" is authored by Toye Sobande, a lawyer and leadership consultant. It was published in The Guardian, a local independent daily newspaper in Nigeria. According to the author, there are many definitions and theories about leadership, but none seems to be suitable in African countries. He asserts that the failed state of African leadership is a long-term consequence of colonization by European powers. To support his assertion, the author suggests that former colonial rulers dismantled the "long-held traditions" that were used as a basis for grooming African leaders before the colonial era. The African leaders who resumed power after independence adopted the bureaucratic leadership styles used by the colonial masters, which had little consideration for the wellbeing of the common civilian.
