Carbaugh (2007) argues that studies on intercultural communication have failed to address the specific and general practices of communication discourse across cultures. He further uses the cultural discourse analysis (CDA) to show how interaction dynamics in culture influences communication. “Cultural discourse analysis raises the general question: how is communication shaped as a cultural practice? (Carbaugh, 2007)”. Focusing on a cultural perspective on communication provides more insights into how certain codes are used in communication in American and other cultures. The cultural discourse depends on related thematic codes including symbols and meanings.
Interpreting observed discourse in a cultural context is a suggested solution to study intercultural communication when there are intercultural encounters. To achieve this, it is necessary to identify the communication practices that depend on cultures and the interactional dynamics in culturally shaped communication (Carbaugh, 2007). The communication practices in a community are closely intertwined with social interaction and culture where people construct meanings within specific contexts. When studying intercultural communication the insiders use communicative practices in an immediate cultural community (Ting-Toomey, 2010). Intercultural interactions involve communication codes that vary depending on culture and CDA is relevant to understand how cultures shape identities and actions.
