MEN AND WOMEN REPRESENTATION
Men and women are usually represented in different ways in literature stories. The issues of feminist however, tend to appear more in vampire stories and fairy tales, although men are also featured through revelation of cultural ideas concerning masculinity. In the stories namely the "Little Red Cap," Varney and the Vampire as well as Dracula, men and women have been represented in distinct ways as they show various social values and anxieties in the nineteenth Century.
The story of the "Little Red Cap" purely indicates the way women are vulnerable and how they tend to get into the deception of men and other situations. Both the girl and grandmother find themselves in danger of being consumed by a wolf because of their trusting tendency. In this case, they are both portrayed as naïve, trusting and innocent concerning the unknown. Moreover, they have been left in a position that is compromising in the entire story of Little Red Cap, which demonstrates that women specifically ought to be on their guard concerning men as well as strangers. In addition, the women have been presented as beings that are naïve and kind-hearted. On the other hand, the men have been represented as saviors or wolves, according to the "Little Red Cap" by Grimms. In some particular versions, the role and representation of genders have been put clearly. For instance in Grimms' version, the wolf eat both the grandmother and the child without any hesitation. This illustrate the way women are likely to be taken advantage within the society in occasions where they fail to be cautious. The wolf that represents a man is portrayed as beastly, hairy and ugly, a description that is in total contrast with kind nature of Red (Koshkin, Grimm, 1992). This shows how brutal and rough some men can be at times especially in handling women. On the other hand, there exists a positive representation of men by the hunter, where he seems to have known the grandmother through his concern the way she snores. The hunter saves the woman as well as the child and uses his intelligence to think first, after which he cuts the wolf open in order to save the women as well as avenging the wolf. The mother is also portrayed in the story as a home and safety symbol where she sends her daughter off to go to her grandmother with food. The woman is also represented as a voice of reason and full of authority in Grimm's version when she instructs her daughter on how to behave on her way to her grandmother's place even though she does not arrive.
The masculinity is evidently shown in the story of Varney the vampire, where Varney overpowers his victims and suck blood. Moreover, Varney represents a hypocritical family friend to Bannerworth family where he is demonstrated as having interest in the daughter called Flora. Varney's survival in the surroundings of Bannerworth's family without being noticed that he was a vampire shows that men can be two-faced, because he was appeared as a normal human being in the presence of the friends and neighbors. In addition, Varney represents the people in the society that lives in self-pity because of their own unacceptable conditions or personality. This is because he is seen committing suicide after he was unable to save himself from the situation of being a vampire (Rymer, 2012). Varney also leaves a letter that contains the account of h...
