Middle skilled jobs nowadays involve contracted services, thus the continued ‘hollowing gap’ in employment in the United States. Low skilled workers cover a majority of the workforce due to the low entry requirements. Additionally, high skilled labor is in high demand in the country despite the limited number of individuals qualified for the jobs. With the service industry taking up a considerable chunk of the labor force, low skilled workers are in high demand (Trevorton, Lempert, & Kumar, 2012). Therefore, more individuals get the opportunity to work under these terms thus leading to an influx of workers. Increased competitiveness, in turn, affects the ability of these workers to form powerful unions that can fight for their rights. Unions create a voice for any form of discrimination against workers thus decreasing rates reduce their ability to create meaningful changes to the system.
