Birth control also referred to as fertility control or contraception are methods used to prevent pregnancy. The use of birth control methods is known as family planning. Birth control methods have been in use for long time but safe methods were discovered in the 2oth century. Some cultures prohibit use of birth control regarding it politically or morally undesirable. There are so many arguments for and against use of birth control.
Arguments for birth control
Use of birth control reduces cases of abortion. Access to birth control methods has a great effect on reducing the number of unplanned pregnancies and effectively reducing abortion. Providing a free market for contraceptives may also reduce the extent to which women are victimized by the partners who want them to be sterile. Though contraceptives increase the sexual freedoms of women especially in developing countries, they are able to prevent unplanned pregnancies and subsequent cruel treatments CITATION Lau09 \l 1033 (Scherer, 2009). Use of birth control is a gain to the economy. Unplanned pregnancies cause an outflow to the economy in the manner of provision of healthcare to low income women during pregnancy and after birth. Medical scheme used in providing health care consumes a significant proportion of taxpayer’s savings. Women also spend time out of work during pregnancy. This reduces their productive ability during which they become dependents and therefore, a burden to the whole economy. As a woman gets more children than planned for, significant proportion of income is spent for their upkeep and upbringing, and less is spent in investment activities CITATION Mel08 \l 1033 (Kearney, Levine, & al, 2008). Thirdly, the world population is growing at a very fast rate and there is immediate need to control the rate of population growth.
