The term abstract expressionism refers to a movement that supported the non-representative paintings that started back in the 1940s and the 50s flourishing in the United States. Although it was spearheaded by a majority of the American artists then, most of the influenced came from the European expatriates. Most of them had grown up during the depression era and also had been greatly influenced by the second world wars as well as the cold aftermath. Some of the renowned painters that were part of the movement of the abstract painters included, Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell, Sam Fransic, Franz Kline, Lee Kransner, phillip Guston among others. Originally the term expressionist painting was used to describe the work of one of the German expressionist. Later in the year 1946 Robert Coates applied it in his critic. The two main characteristics of the abstract painting that is also the source of divide in the styles, is the focus on the active gesture style and the passive colour field that works with mood reflections.
