The play focuses on the Younger family which represents the African-American family. The family lives in poverty and struggles to rise above their struggles. They live on the South side of Chicago and are living the American dream. Ruth Younger, the wife of Walter Lee Younger opts for abortion due to financial hardships the family faces. The husband works for a wealthy white man (Arnolds) as a chauffeur. The Younger family depict a strenuous relationship brought out by the financial challenges they face. Lena, Walter’s mother leaves with them and they depend on their father’s life insurance after his death. Beneatha, the sister to Walter struggles with her medical school as the younger son Travis, sleeps on the coach due to the congestion of the small family apartment.
