The concept of a healing hospital is a radical change in the way medical care and services are delivered to the patients. Focus is on creating a serene, therapeutic and nurturing environment with emphasis on stress reduction, accelerated recovery, reduced medicine use and shortened hospitalization with lessened pain. A good relationship between self and others is enhanced and experienced when there is harmony in mind, body and spirit.
The components of a healing hospital can be generalized into the physical environment of care, fusion of work design and technology and the personal relationships. It involves conscious promotion of belief and awareness that healing is a technique that accelerates recovery and is based on love, dignity and compassion. People form relationships based on a commitment to provide an environment of love CITATION Eri03 \l 1033 (Erie Chapman, 2003). The physical environment is enhanced through cool relaxing colors while noise pollution is kept at a minimum through use of silencers on machines and having carpeted hallways.
Such a space is stress-free and would be ideal for those in recovery who need quiet and plenty of sleep to enhance regeneration of their cells. The design of such spaces should be to maximize privacy and dignity during a period of stress in patient’s lives. There would also be a provision for peaceful natural gardens. Technologically advanced equipment would help reduce anxiety by speeding up of tests. Music and educational materials on display would also help generate a healing environment.
Challenges to the creation of a healing environment relate to the provision of quality...
