In the training of the mental health professionals, the contemporary standards of practice are needed as supports. These contemporary standards include awareness of diversity through actively responding to social, cultural, linguistic, and spiritual and on the gender diversity based on the consumers and carers (Prince, Patel, Saxena, Maj, Maselko, Phillips, Rahman, 2007). The second standard is the maintenance of rights, responsibilities, safety and privacy. Health professionals ensures they uphold the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of those with the mental disorders as well as their families. Thirdly is consideration of the consumer and career participation, which aid in determining the individual treatment and care. The health professionals are able to promote, encourage and ensure there is full support on the participation of the consumers, family members as well as the carers in the process of planning (Elliott, Huizinga & Menard, 2012). For instance in the provision of therapeutic alliances with the consumers.

While planning for a research with special populations, a counselor may face two dilemmas. They involve the ethical and technical dilemmas. Ethical dilemmas are involved in the process of treatment since they call for professional conduct on the wellbeing of the patient (Lo, 2012). One of the dilemma I would face is choosing between saving the condition of the patient and choosing not to inform the people concerned. For instance, a mentally ill patient who needs the attention of the professional health officer but ethical consideration hinders me from giving information to the authority without the consent of the patient. There are principles of ethical research involves confidentiality, professional competence and colleague conduct. While doing ethical research, I would apply the principle of confidentiality and avoid deceptive practices.
