Genetically modified foods also known as GMOs or GM foods are crop plants that are created with the use of advanced molecular biology techniques for animal and human consumption. The aim of this modification is to enhance plant traits that are desired such as better nutritional content or improved resistance to herbicides. This method has been found to be more accurate and less time consuming. Questions are raised whether the public should be informed of genetically modified foods that have been released to the market place as well as whether there are any safety concerns.
The public should be informed about the foods that have been genetically modified in the market place since in the US alone; there are 40 plants that have been genetically modified for commercial purposes. For example, tomatoes, cantaloupes, soybeans, sugar beets, corn and cotton plants(Whitman2000). Fish and animals have also been modified for better production of milk, red and white meat. Though not all of these foods have been released for public consumption, there are more GM foods that are being stocked in U.S grocery stores than the public is aware of. There are few whole fruits, fish meat, milk and vegetables that are genetically modified and available in grocery stores.
