Why is it important to know gene location on chromosomes?
Life scientists know that finding out the gene location on chromosomes is important due to several reasons. To begin with, gene location has a great impact in shaping the evolution of the organisms as well as their traits. In fact as McAllister and associates (1994) write, in recent times, it has been suggested that physical traits are less associated to evolution but more as a result of the location of the genes that can be found in the genome of the cells.
This means that the location of the genes plays a central role when it comes to the variability of the biological traits and that is the identity factor. What this means is that researchers who understand the location of genes in chromosomes can come up with better understanding of the genetic basis of a disease and to extent to which it has affected the host.
How has gene linkage helped you understand heredity in your own family tree?
