The ecosystem basically refers to a community of all living things in any given environment that interact with the nonliving components in that same environment. In the ecosystem are abiotic or the nonliving things and there are the biotic things which are also referred to as the living things. Energy in the ecosystem flows from the sun as the main source. This is the energy that drives all the processes that take place in the environment. To get into the ecosystem, the solar energy is taken through the photosynthesis process. The process of photosynthesis converts the energy gained from the sun into chemical energy. Plants and some of the bacteria that are photosynthetic convert the energy and then pass it on to the consumers. In this case herbivores eat the plants as the primary consumers.
The primary consumers are then eaten by the secondary consumers which in this case are the carnivores. When they all die, they are then eaten by the tertiary consumers which help in the decomposition process. The food cycles in the ecosystem also follow the energy cycle within the environment.
