With approximately 1.37 billion people, India is the world’s second-most populous country after China (Chandrashekhar, 2019). Projections by the United Nations indicate that the country’s population would surpass China’s by 2027. In this regard, the key demographic problems facing the country are high population growth rate, adverse sex ratio, and demographic disparity across states.
The high population growth rate is attributed to social factors that include unavailability of birth control, early marriages, and poverty (Vohra, 2015). The high growth rate is also attributed to declining death rates. India’s declining death rates has been caused by improved health and medical facilities, hygiene improvement, and better economic conditions. In this sense, it is important to note that the factors that are most effective in lowering birth rates include poverty alleviation, rising levels of education, and the adoption of conscious family planning methods.
