The Supreme Court universally ruled that a Massachusetts rule that had created a 35-foot “buffer-zone” round the entrance of abortion clinics prohibiting protesting, an abuse to the First Amendment. John Roberts, the Chief Justice, held the opinion that the law was undemocratic for it obstructed nonviolent demonstration on public streets. The court says that states must pursue alternative orders to limit protest in the event the protestors obstruct the entrance.
In the case of McCullen v. Coakley, which was brought by an anti-abortion grandmotherly and a counselor, Massachusetts disputed that a competing right: right to obtain abortion, was in potential violation.
