Helping people who have psychological disorders is one thing, but when they get involved in the legal system due to allegations of criminal activity, everything can change very quickly. This assignment will center on how mental illness is often a consideration in the criminal justice system. You will choose a case story involving the insanity plea and consider the difficulties of assessing this in a criminal case, along with important ethical considerations. These stories can become sensationalized in the news, but as psychology students, it is important to consider the research and academic information that can help us advocate and support people with psychological disorders, while also considering victims of the crimes, and their families. As you learned in this week’s unit, the term “insanity” is a legal, rather than psychological, concept. After reviewing Chapter 18 in your text on the legal and ethical issues regarding criminal commitment, complete the following: Select a news story about a criminal case where the defendant used the “not guilty by reason of insanity” defense. Your chapter reading for this unit gives one example that you can use, but many more examples exist for you by doing Google searches. Write a 2-page expository essay (not counting title and reference page) incorporating the following: Overview of the case story: In 2–3 paragraphs, provide an overview of the case story. Not guilty by insanity defense: In at least two paragraphs, explain whether it is difficult for the defendant in the chosen scenario to be found not guilty by insanity in a court of law. Discuss how it was determined whether a mental illness affected the individual’s ability to know right from wrong at the time the crime was committed. Ethical issues: In at least two paragraphs, discuss any ethical concerns that pertain to the chosen case scenario and how a psychologist would protect the client’s rights.
