The main focus will be on community policing principals and their importance in law enforcement. Difference between traditional and community policing has been also discussed. The light has been thrown on the four basic stages of SARA and the importance of each one. This writing ends with five top qualities of detective and undercover officers.
Compare & Contract of Eras of Policing
American Policing history consists of three basic eras of policing which are Political Era, Reform Era and Community Era. All have their own specification and particular aspects regarding police. Reformation has been kept on to shape the policing as it is presently.
Political Era
The time between the 1800’s to the 1920’s is referred to as Political Era of Policing. In this era, the capabilities and functions of police were ruled by local politicians. The mission of police was the same as the mission of politic and its importance figures (Muir, 2015). There was an extreme absence of civil system at this time. Recruitments and firings have been acted by the will of politicians. There were no official training and policemen were sent to the petrol with quite a little instructions beyond rulebook. Police watched the crimes which were only used to keep concern by politicians (Community Policing, 2018). The police were nothing, just a mean of earning and getting voters. Job merit was demolished to a great extent. For example, “in order to secure a position as a patrol officer in New York City, the going rate was $300, while officers in San Francisco were required to pay $400.54 In regard to promoted positions, the going rate in New York City for a sergeant’s position was $1,600, and it was $12,000 to $15,000 for a position as captain” (Muir, 2015). After getting the job, police officers were demanded to give out a portion from their salaries to support a particular ruling party.
Reform Era
Between the 1920’s and 1970s, this era brings plenty of reformation in policing of America. This is why it is called the Reform Era of Policing (Tello, 2015). Many positive changings come to the board during this era as compared to political era. Politics has been made incapable to interfere in the police matters. Recruitments and firing were accomplished by the newly implemented civil system. Police had stopped to represent politics and started to be seen as law enforcement. Plenty of new training methods, concepts and procedures have been introduced. Police foot posts got changed into petrol cars (e-Roll Call Magazine, 2016). The example of the brilliance of this era can be O.W Wilson as “his is the greatest contribution to American policing lies within police administration. Specifically, his vision involved the centralization of police agencies; this includes both organizational structure and management of personnel” (Tello, 2015). However, this era is related to the distant police officers with their communities. They become more professionals to involve in common groups of people.
Community Era
From the 1970’s to the present, this era is titled a Community Era of Policing. As a contract to reform era, this brings the main factors of practice which mainly include the concerns of police offers for their communities (O'Shea, 2017). They are obliged to lessen crime, fear and all those actions which may affect the communities. More, “have you ever seen signs in a neighborhood that read 'Neighborhood Watch?” This is an example of community policing, where individuals partnered with traditional police forces work to make their neighborhoods safer and to minimize crime” (O'Shea, 2017). Officers are also stressed to make the people of a community feel like the police department is concerned for their critical and reverent feedback.
Training and Skills
The special training and skill developments are imparted in academy training to bring out exceptional workforce in the police department of America. These skills make them successful officers of the future and also enable them to brilliantly ensure law enforcement. According to my rationale, firstly, they should be learnt to quick response and fast action in order to attempt the job with full activeness. Laziness and comfort gaining must be kept away from them. For example in American, police gives response while reaching the spot in hardy 10 to 15 minutes which indicate the quick response to 911 calls (Study, 2017). Secondly, they should be taught to empower their observation as keen as possible. Not a single and little uncommon happening would be able to overlook by them when they are on the duty. Thirdly, they must learn ...
