Accordingly, this article would focus on an understanding of the similarities and differences between the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) and the Uniform Crime Report (UCR). It is the author’s belief that understanding the methods, usage, and efficacy of both of these techniques is essential for the success of the justice system.
Understanding the Similarities and Differences
Both the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) and the Uniform Crime Report (UCR) are used to gather information about crime in the US, although they differ in terms of the implementing agency, the techniques, and the kinds of data that are collected, among others.
On the one hand, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) maintains the UCR, a system for gathering crime statistics. It is based on information provided by regional and national law enforcement organizations, collated into a database, which allows for an easier and more comprehensive analysis of the realities of crime. However, as compared to other techniques, the data gathered by the UCR is primarily focused on eight major crime categories, including arson, homicide, rape, robbery, and violent assault.
