Ronczkowski (2012) states, “there are essentially four categories of sources used by law enforcement personnel” (p.120). Those are listed to include (1) anonymous source, (2) non-confidential source (open), (3) confidential source, (4) unwitting source.

When a crime is committed, there are usually four bodies that come into help in the investigation. A source as defined by Ronczcowski (2012), is any individual who overtly or unknowingly submits information that might aid investigators in their intelligence assignments. These sources are anonymous, unwitting, confidential, and non confidential sources (Ronczcowski, 2012).Out of these four sources, it is perhaps the unwitting one that is the most important, from a personal perspective, due to a number of reasons that will be highlighted below.
Unwitting sources are the best since they are extremely resourceful. These sources are a rich harbor for information that might be immensely important for investigators.Unwitting sources eliminate the need for intensive interrogation,which usually affects the quality and credibility of information given(Jrank).The physical presence and willingness of the source,plays a crucial role in the provision of substantial clues that might alter the course of the investigation(Davies et.al.,n.d.).
Additionally, unwitting sources are usually under no obligation or pressure to convey what they have to convey. They also don't suffer from the fear or threats associated with being a witness, as most other types of witnesses contend with(Becker & Wetzel,2006).
