Travis Hirschi is well known for his 1969 theory of social control, which states that by exploiting the normal socialization process brings up self-control. The society may control an individual directly through punishment, indirectly through identification, internalization through the super ego and by control through satisfaction of needs. It was developed in the event of trying to describe what causes crime. Crime occurs when the social bonds are weakened. Criminal behavior is probable to each person, but the difference comes with the level of social bound. In his theory, he explained four major elements that may lead to delinquent behavior.
Attachment comes as the foremost elements. This is the effectiveness and closeness with other people especially those close to them especially their parents, relatives, schoolmates, church mates, peers and colleagues as this are the people whom they spend most of their time with. They determine a person’s internalizations of norms, values, rules, how their super ego works, and their own conscience. The people close to them act as role models so whatever the role models do might reciprocate to an individual. If these people are so insensitive to them the less they will care about the norms, morals values and rules. Hirschi compares attachment to super-ego; attachment is the sociological super-ego. The family is the core as it is the one that teaches accepted behavior. If they have a strong and stable attachment with different people, it is difficult for them to be delinquent.
