Adam Masters’ “The Quality of Union Governance in Australia” portrays how corruption has adversely affected union governance. In particular, “quality means governance that is democratic, accountable and transparent, lawful, incorruptible and impartial, effective and efficient, professional and civil, and robust” (Masters, 2016, p. 4). One of the primary features of the article is that it shows how corruption affects the quality of leadership in unions negatively. Union corruption in Australia is a significant social problem, which has been resistant to legal solutions for many years. The other main point that the author makes is that unions have failed to cooperate with relevant government authorities to fight corruption. As such, even if the royal commissions coerce union officials to give evidence, these leaders do not do it willingly. Union corruption comprises of different manners of criminality and misconduct. Some of them include breach of regulations, financial misconduct, blackmail, privacy breaches, unauthorized payouts and payments, and union funds misappropriation. Others are fraud, bribes, perjury, death threats, physical assault, and verbal abuse.
