Forensic investigators use commercial forensic packages in a wide range of criminal investigations. The computer forensic field is the latest technological advancement in the field of criminology and forensic science. The significant advantage of these packages is that they are dedicated to technical and admissibility in court (Daniel, 2011). Therefore, these dedicated programs are used by forensic investigators to acquire digital evidence. Some of the most common tools include Linux DD, EnCase, and FTK. For instance, EnCase allows investigators to conduct investigations as the package has everything they need to do research. However, these forensic tools are expensive to acquire, which requires examiners to have a significant monetary investment on these tools (Daniel, 2011). Furthermore, commercial forensic packages have an annual maintenance fee that must be paid to keep them up to date.
