As the government implemented lockdown measures to curtail the spread of the Covid-19 virus, I had no other alternative but to use online shopping sites to get vital products to my doorstep. This created an opportunity for cybercriminals as I was almost scammed after buying a wireless router at an incredibly low price. I received verification from Amazon to verify my account. However, Amazon found the seller's account fake and closed it instantly within 24 hours. The cybercrime incident made me ashamed and embarrassed, and I often blamed myself for the mistake. This has had a long-term impact on my confidence when making online purchases. In this particular context, the cybercriminal took advantage of my psychological vulnerability due to the lockdown, thus manipulating my emotional instability to execute cyber fraud (Ma & McKinnon, 2022).
Despite the negative experience with cybercriminals, people are not responding effectively to emerging cybercrimes.
