Introduction
As a result of various crimes, residents in cities in the United States live in a state of apprehensiveness. It follows that significant and minor contemporary issues affect large urban areas in this report, knowledgeable and scientifically supported reactions to two contemporary issues affecting the large cities. To further understand these issues, the report focuses on New York City since it is among the largest cities in the United States. According to Almuhanna et al. (2021), New York is one of the leading candidates with increased crime rates because of its geographically fortunate position and its status as the commercial hub of the globe. The city serves as a destination for many visitors and immigrants. Criminal justice would be severely weakened if it were not for interpersonal connections and, to some extent, the criminal element in society. Inside the framework of this idea, the local government of the area will get assistance in advancing the cause of bridging the glaring gaps within the city. This article addresses policies and procedures regarding the prosecution of criminals and the fight against terrorist organizations as its two main topics.
Criminal Prosecution of Police Officer in New York
Over the years, various news outlines published stories that provided different explanations as to why it is difficult for police officers to face legal consequences. The case of George Floyd, a man who passed away at the hands of law enforcement officers in Minnesota, was featured prominently as the top story in 2020. Crusto (2022) argues that this encounter with the police is unfortunately not unique to a particular city or state. In other words, the same difficulties are encountered in each state, and New York is not exempt from this problem. Crusto (2022) continues that it has been difficult to bring criminal charges against police officers in New York City over the years. A national data set on police prosecution illustrates how uncommon it is for the police not only to convict a suspect but also to face legal consequences for their actions.
Philip Stinson, a professor at Bowling Green State College and a scholar in the criminal justice field, lends credence to the assertion (2020). The professor is responsible for collecting data, which reveals that very few police officers have been prosecuted for misconduct. This fact remains a reality despite the number of offenses that directly or indirectly implicate police officers, whether on or off duty. To postulate the origin of the problem, it is essential to check on the operation of the policy from the perspective of the prosecution.

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the criminal justice system will investigate and prosecute any member of the police force who has committed an act of omission (Wentzlof, 2019). It follows that the victim follows a specific procedure to get justice. The first step is for the victim to file a complaint with the authorities. It is dependent on the location where the criminal act took place. The New York City Police Department then begins its investigation. The gathering of information is the primary objective of this step. During this investigation phase, the suspect is taken into custody, and evidence is amassed. If all goes according to the standard procedure, the police will also question potential witnesses. According to the type of offense, civil or criminal, the suspect must be brought before the court and put on trial within the first twenty-four hours.
Despite this, there is a possibility of difficulty in obtaining precise details about the dynamics of the problem from the police. As stated earlier, the number of prosecuted officers is low compared to the number of crimes that implicate these officers. Arguably, it is possible that the character of the investigation is to blame for the failure of the criminal policy and procedure. When members of the police force are tasked with investigating their fellow officers, there is a significant risk of corruption (Stinson & Wentzlof, 2020). In other instances, the investigation process often takes too long, and eventually, the victims do not get justice. In the same regard, some officers tend to go unpunished, or the punishment for their crimes does not suffice for their actions.
Anti-terrorism in New York
Regarding the policies and procedures on terrorism, it is evident that both the state and the federal governments will be forced to respond if terrorists make any threats or perhaps carry out an attack (Yalowitz, 2019). The municipal administration of New York fulfils the entirety of its responsibilities in the management of this type of alarm. It is important to note that they initially only manage the repercussions but ultimately assume responsibility for the complete role throughout the process.
