Budget and Budget Highlights of This Year Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is the statewide law enforcement agency responsible for enforcing the laws, aiding emergency management, offering driver licenses, and protecting the infrastructure within the state. The agency's budget in the fiscal year 2024 amounts to about 1.46 billion dollars (Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, 2024). The significant sources of revenue are the general revenue fund, federal funds, and dedicated accounts, which include driver's license fees and criminal history records. Among the most remarked line items are the border security operation of $215 million and $72 million on disaster response initiatives. Texas DPS spent most of its budget on the Texas Highway Patrol, Criminal Investigations Division, and the Intelligence and Counterterrorism Division in the fiscal year 2024. Also, the priority was given to investments in IT infrastructure modernization and improving cybercrime units. Recruitment and retention of officers and technological upgrades were becoming costly for the agency, mainly because turnover and the professional market were high in Texas.
