Introduction
The government plays a vital role in disaster management in the United States. When a disaster has been declared, the federal government, with the assistance of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, responds and supports territories, states, and local jurisdictions affected by a disaster. It is important to note that response actions are generally planned under the National Response Framework. However, the United States has experienced numerous disasters, and agencies in charge of response have yet to respond accordingly. This resulted in the passage of laws and program policies to mitigate natural/man-made disasters and other types of emergencies. These legislations include the Stafford Act and Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act, among others. This essay will examine these legislations and the purpose of creating emergency management laws.

1 The Stanford Act
The Stafford Act gives details of processes and programs in which the Federal government offers emergency and disaster aid to local, state, territorial, and people affected by a presidentially declared disaster. It is important to note that legislation encourages local and state governments to develop a comprehensive emergency preparedness plans for effective coordination. The legislation also promotes the usage of insurance coverage to offset losses incurred during a disaster.
2 Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act
President George Bush signed the post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act on October 4th, 2006. This act recognized the existed of FEMA and was provided with the power to remedy the gaps that became evident during FEMA’s response to Hurricane Katrina. After the amendment, FEMA is responsible for coordinating and supporting the country in a comprehensive emergency management system of protection, panning, mitigation, and recovery.
3 Presidential Policy Directive 8: National Preparedness (PPD-8)
The primary reason this policy was enacted was to strengthen the security and resilience of the United States through effectively preparing threats that pose a risk to security. These risks include terrorism, cyber-attacks, and pandemics, among others.
