Surrogate keys, also known as the synthetic primary key, are automatically generated into a table when a new record is inserted. A database declared to be the table's primary key generates a surrogate key. The surrogate key lacks any inbuilt meaning and is the unique key because it is usually created automatically for each record embedded in the table (Shobirin et al., 2017). The surrogate key is meaningless because it cannot convey any significance in business regarding the record it is linked to in any table. Also, the surrogate key is sequential.
This means that it is doled out in successive requests every time new records are created in a table, starting with one and moving up to the highest number needed (Sohail & Dominic, 2015).
