Ever since the end of the (American) Civil War in 1865, the re-united USA has steadily rose to influence the world in cultural, political, and military spheres to become a global super-power. Rapid industrialization coupled with mass immigration into the country augmented this surge to its status in the early 20th century. Several factors contributed to the birth of such development. However, the three major aspects that led to this attribute include; economic growth, US foreign policy, and military power (George, 2002). These factors played a great part in the development of the country, thus it is worth examining each from a broad point of view. For instance, economic growth of the United States contributed greatly in its rise to a superpower. The expanding power was fuelled by the immense wealth of mineral resources such as oil, gas in the country that invoked an economic boom, due to its favoring geography. This allowed a 75% income growth among the Americans towards the year 1900 and another 13 % in the following two decades. This wealth, however, was accumulated in the Northern parts of the country as the South had suffered from secessionist trend and conflict with the North.
This boom created an impression of exemplary life in the United States that stirred massive immigrations by Europeans into the country with about 27.5 million persons arriving in the country between 1865 and 1918. This provided a recipe for a large market base for local products thus promoting industrialization and labor base for the agricultural, railway and textile industries. The increasing need for new products in the broad market culminated in revolutionary innovations with discoveries of the telegraph and steel that created immense opportunities (Meernik, 2004). The selling of these US- branded products to oversee markets helped further its influence to the rest of the world with the country commanding most of the world trade routes with policies to protect their items whenever they traveled across the oceans. This allowed the cultural influence to the rest of the world through its branded products.
Patenting of innovations allowed firms such as Rockefeller, Morgan, Carnegie to monopolize the world with their US-branded products. With the politicians buoyed by the success of such innovations, they allocated more of the budgetary funds to Science, innovation, research, and Development. The allocation of resources in the different fields resulted in acclaimed learning institutions that attracted students from all over the world. The birth and rise of technological advancements in various industries also largely defined the progress of the country in terms of power attainment. Technological innovations such as those by Bell, Wright Brothers and Edison, ameliorated the techniques of production. A good example of such contribution is in construction of infrastructure, which enhanced the quality of finished products and their performance thus facilitating value addition. The Panama Canal was one infrastructural feat that was made possible by technological innovation. By the year 1900s, the United States had surpassed Great Britain in world wealth concentration with 38% of global wealth, 13% more than Britain’s.
Coal production by the United States was apparently equal to that of Britain and Germany combined with its national income equivalent to those of the successive four biggest economies combined. This allowed the shift of power from Europe to the United States (Meernik, 2004). The amassed wealth enabled the United the United States to grow its military prowess with increased land, air, and naval forces and advanced weaponry. This military aspect had its provenance in the US- Spain war of 1898 where the US squashed the already waning Spanish empire. This expelled the Spain from Cuba’s Santiago harbor before the United States declared Cuba independent.
