Clinical psychology is one of the oldest fields establish in 1890, but have since undergone major transformation in the past decades. The field of clinical psychology has been influenced by events like wars, necessitating technology revolution that has led to several innovations. This essay highlights historical journey of clinical psychology providing a comprehensive understanding of the gains and how the field continues to develop.
Clinical psychology history can be traced back from the ancient Greek philosophers, up to the era of Sigmund Freud to today’s modern psychological practices, where a wide range of information forms part of its philosophy. This is because scientists have kept on exploring the nature of human being resulting to transformations witnessed in clinical psychology today. In ancient Greek, science had already acknowledged the relationship between the mind and the body and how they influenced illness (Plante, 2011). For example, Hippocrates, Plato and Aristotle discovered that the soul is more in charge of the body in that any problems generated from the soul affects the physical parts of the body. During this age, mental and physical diseases were treated as spirits and so healing was more like working with human spirit. As the psychology developed, most practitioners who by then were medical doctors believed that mental disorders generated from problem associated with digestion, the blood, the central nervous system and human reproductive organs, commonly referred to somatic psychology. Silas Weir Mitchell became famous based on his reputation to use its method to treat civil war soldiers who were traumatized as a result of war (Pickern, Wade and Donald, 2002).
The method included combining physical rest to reduce mental activities. Clinical psychology had its major turn in the ninetieth century when Sigmund Freud and other scientist looked at the holistic view of health (Plante, 2011).
