Either the Soviet Union or the United States of America (USA) was not responsible for the beginning of the Cold War. In particular, the war started due to the increasing tension between the two countries slightly after the Second World War.
The USA engaged in various actions that contributed to the rising tension between it and the Soviet Union. First, it responded to the communism expansion in Eastern Europe by preparing its military like the country wanted to start a war. Second, Congress came up with a containment strategy that increased military spending to prevent Russians from interfering with the internal affairs of other countries (The American Yawp, n.d.). The USA's motivation came from testing the hydrogen atomic bomb to instill fear to the Soviet Union, who had tested its weapons to show the USA that it was ready if a war was to begin.
Furthermore, the Soviet Union contributed to the growing tension between it and the USA. First, it continued to expand its allies in Europe through communism. Second, the country was the first one to test an atomic bomb so that the USA can know that it is not the only one with deadly weapons.
