The world continues to learn about its history with each passing day. Archeology is a key piece to the study and comprehension of ancient history and the lives of those who came before. One archeological site that helped to shed light on a civilization that dates back to the third millennium BC is the Saar settlement. It is widely believed that the Saar settlement in Bahrain is quite old and goes as far back as the Dilmun civilization. The Dilmun civilization is believed to have existed in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, and as Crawford writes, the name Dilmun “appears on some of the earliest written documents in the world” (1998). This is simply a confirmation of the era in which the civilization existed. The site at Saar had been underground for many years. However, excavations have helped to reveal that there is evidence of civilization and life and hence the need to protect and interpret the site. In this paper, a detailed description of Saar’s site is provided, including the village, burial site, the site of the temple of Saar, and materials as well as other relics that were discovered.
The Saar Settlement
The Saar settlement does confirm that life existed and that there was some sort of lifestyle or mode of living that the people aspired towards. The houses in the settlement were, first of all, built-in rows instead of the stand-alone option that people nowadays are fond of. These houses shared walls. These walls were made of local limestone, and so were the door sockets as well.
With regard to rooms, a majority of the houses were believed to be two or three-roomed buildings (Crawford, Killick, and Moon, 2017). They were L-shaped, with the outer room being bigger than the inner room. The inner room was smaller than the outer room. Also, the inner room was believed to be for storage purposes. The outer room was a private courtyard, and these have been well-preserved.
Burial Site
