It is important that one court of the land be given the final say. Such a court should exist so that it can decide matters that have been contentious or have not been resolved by other courts. It is also important that such a court exist so that it deals with finality matters that cannot be taken to relatively lower courts, such as matters relating to presidential election disputes. A court that has the final say is also crucial in determining cases where the constitution may not be clear about the course of action to be taken (McKeever, 2020). If there were no such court, some disputes may wreak havoc and may never be resolved. For these reasons, therefore, it is important to have a court that is given the final say.
Although the constitutions provide that a supreme court judge should be of good behavior, there is a negative side to life appointment. Appointment for life means that it is only a few individuals at a time who can hold the office of a supreme court judge. In the modern world, and especially in democracies, it is crucial that public offices such as that of the president be regularly replaced. Extensive evidence reveals that progress is more likely when the occupants of public office are regularly replaced as opposed to life service (Lewis & Morris, 2017). There is also the issue of mental health. Suppose a judge becomes mentally ill and lacks the ability to make sound judgments. Further, if a judge decides to work with or against some people of groups, it would be difficult for the people or groups in question to receive justice.
