Roosevelt’s Civil Rights Record
The election of President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR), whose tenure started in the year 1933, marked the end and start of a new dawn for various social groups and minorities. His reign as the president of the United States, which was successful for four terms, was attributed to the positive social and cultural changes and associations he had for the minority groups. Roosevelt can be credited for the fact that most of the minorities in the United States are generally inclined towards the Democrats' political faction. Although his tenure was faced with lots of economic uncertainties as a result of the great depression, FDR championed civil rights for all, marking the decline of discrimination based on race, gender, or social status.
The main demographic group that benefited immensely with presidents Roosevelt's tenure are the African Americans. Many of African Americans were hit hard by the great depression and were forced to move around in search of jobs. They faced a lot of discrimination and segregation by the whites as a result. Fortunately, the Roosevelt administration that was dubbed the New Deal (Tsesis, 2008), came to their rescue. The New Deal ensured there was no discrimination particularly in public works and education programs (Tsesis, 2008). This allowed African Americans to develop a sense of belonging to America as equal treatment with whites began.
