Introduction
Every significant event in the history of mankind, whether good or bad, is important in every way and worth celebrating in the form of commemoration. Every year people have an opportunity to ensure that the Holocaust and those people who died, lost their families, and friends during horrific episodes are never forgotten in human history. Remembering these people who lost their lives during these incidents has become hard for people. Thus the theme should be “don’t stand by.” The contemporary relevance of the Holocaust is very important today and in the coming days.
Assessment
Perhaps 60 years might not sound that important, but when it comes to Holocaust remembrance, it is very important. Just like any other year, it is good to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day. For example in the 1990s, there was the Rwanda Genocide, a decade earlier there were hideous Al-Anfal campaigns in Iraq. It reminds the current generation of how far mankind has come from, and the dark days that people lived in, in the past. Holding commemoration for such events are geared towards honoring those who died while at the same time, learn a bit or two from such acts.
Looking at the holocaust, it is quite shocking to think of how one man could do such unimaginable evil. Hitler embarked on such a murderous rampage across Germany and Poland simply due to his immense hatred for the Jews and their sympathizers. Coming up with such diverse and somehow ‘creative’ ways of mass murder can only work to create a picture of what a person’s mind can conjure when placed in a state of complete emotional illusion. It also illustrates how far a person can go just to prove a point, especially if he or she isn’t controlled. Upon further look, there is the risk posed by having a compulsive individual using the resources at his or her disposal to wreak havoc, just because they can.
The history of some horrible incidents like World War 11 and the Rwanda Genocide has led the government to be very sensitive to the need to educate people about the Holocaust. In the United States and other schools in Europe, students are taught about the holocaust and the related ethical and moral issues. Holocaust commemoration has also assisted to create symbolic places and memorials like the Museum of the History of Polish Jews. This museum is used as an educational training center with facilities to supplement the studies on the Holocaust. Other examples include the Jewish Museum in Prague and the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York.[] []
Unfortunately, similar events like the holocaust are still happening even in the present day across various parts of the world. People are being butchered in numbers, just for the selfish reasons of a few influential others. The civil war that was in Darfur is one example. Even after the creation of the new state of South Sudan, there is still war over the available natural resources. Thousands have so far been killed, and more thousands displaced by the conflict. The warlords seem hell-bent on simply acquiring the wealth of the nation, at the expense of the nation itself. Such is the case also in Myanmar, where the minority Rohingya population has over the decades been persecuted by the state. The state has so often been accused of killing and displacing these people using the military.
Young people should continue to develop an understanding of the consequences of some ideologies in society. Student can also be taken to memorial and historical sites so that they can gain full insight into what it is like to live through the horrific events like the Holocaust. If students are taken to these sites, they will become socially and morally aware of the effects of exclusionary policies. It will also foster a sense of responsibility to young people. Teaching people about the Holocaust will also assist them to develop their interpersonal and emotional life skills. Students and young people need to learn about the Holocaust to prevent racism and prejudice in the future . Since schools have concentrated on teaching the effects of racism in society, they have not been able to educate students on some of the factors that resulted in historical Holocausts.[]
Educational institutions have been endowed with the responsibility of educating students and the public who do not know the Holocaust and recent political events even though they have his information with them. There is a need to preserve Holocaust Sites for the future generation to learn from them. Young people are the future leaders so it is important to make sure that the Holocaust events are not repeated, especially now that survivors can open up and tell their stories. People must be exposed to these historical events because of their importance to promote tolerance and understanding of other people. Additionally, these lessons will give people insights into the historical, social, economic and, political factors that resulted in the Holocaust. They will also be able to understand how these factors can be able to establish a democratic society.[] []
Review
There are several ways and methods countries can use to create awareness of the Holocaust. On method that is very popular and has been implemented by a lot of countries around the world is Holocaust Memorial Day. People need to remember those people who were killed and those whose lives were destroyed in the events of the Holocaust. During Memorial Days, people remember victims of different historic events. For example the Rwanda Genocide. These events should be held annually. For example, in...
