In contrast, the Aztec Empire in the present Mexico was on an entirely different level in cultural and political development. The Aztecs, risen under monarchy, such as Itzcoatl and later Moctezuma I, were actively creating an empire that would link Tenochtitlan as one of the dominating mestizo-sized urban complexes. This period, however, is typically analyzed under the theme of imperialism, where focus is given to imperialism on indigenous achievements and strength. Referring to the idea of contested histories introduced by Linda Tuhiwai Smith, this means that Indigenous people offer a much more diverse cultural chronicle and civilization in the pre-Columbian period than simple Indigenous surrender to Europeans, disease, and brutality.
