Around the 1830's, the public attitudes of slavery among southerners began to change from a necessary evil to a positive good. Read the pro-slavery documents (found in the Manifest Destiny, Abolition and the Civil War section of the Links) and write a two page essay examining the descriptions of the defense on slavery offered in these documents. Do not make the mistake of reading general information about the period and not the specific readings.

Slavery was a major issue in the 18th century in the United States of America. It majorly involved African Americans working for the whites, where the African Americans were the enslaved while the whites were the masters. In slavery, enslaved people were mistreated as they worked for longer hours on plantations, and there were harsh weather conditions. Other enslaved people were not paid, while others were subjected to brutal punishment. It resulted in debates where whites were against slavery while some were pro-slavery (Sudo, 2021). Citizens who were pro-slavery argued by justifying the reasons why slavery was important and should continue in the United States of America. Among the men who were pro-slavery included George Fitzhugh and James Henry Hammond. These men advocated for slavery in their region and the entire American nation.
