Preservation of Cultural Heritages

Essay Instructions:

Context:

Cultural heritage sites embody meaning, memories, and stories. They symbolize our individual, community, and national identities. In this assignment, you will consider how the role of cultural heritage and shared experiences with that heritage changes as populations immigrate, as our economies change, and as the landscape changes around us in a globalized world. How should we consider those sites representing our collective heritage into our everyday lived experiences? How can we protect those sites, and how can we help teach each other (and the rest of the world) to appreciate the meaningful places or monuments and histories of cultures around the world? This Individual Project (IP) provides you with the chance to explore how humanities organizations work toward building and sustaining cultural connections within and between populations by protecting and educating the world about cultural heritage today and in the future.

Instructions:

Please visit the UNESCO World Heritage List. Click on different sites within the United States and all over the world.

Find and read at least 1 credible source from the AIU Library or the Internet on the topic of preservation of heritage sites. View this video to learn about how to select credible sources of information.

Then, using this template, write an essay that addresses each of the following points:

Select 2 sites (at least 1 should be from outside the United States) that you find particularly interesting, and describe the sites you chose and why you find them to be significant.

Why is it important to protect these sites?

Discuss ideas on how tourists visiting these sites can generate revenue and employment for the local economy.

Thinking as a cultural anthropologist, how would you argue for the preservation of these sites?

Support your arguments with examples, as well as information from intellipath® and the credible sources that you located. Use APA format to cite your sources within your paper, and list them on your Reference page.

Follow APA formatting requirements. Your paper should be 2–3 pages in length (not counting the Title or Reference pages), should include a Title page and a Reference page, and should be double-spaced with 1-inch margins throughout.

Ensure good writing. Follow an organized paragraph structure. Open with an introduction paragraph, close with a conclusion paragraph, and check for grammar and spelling errors.

Preservation of Heritages

Preserving heritages remains a vital prospect considering the value of various sites to humanity. Cultural heritage sites represent national, community, and individual identities. To that extent, the sites are repositories of stories, meaning, and memories that are collective contributors to global interactions of humans. As the world changes through economic transformations and integration of social attributes, it becomes more important to protect cultural heritage sites. In this paper, emphasis is put on exploring the importance and significance of preserving cultural heritages by assessing two sites: Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus within the India metropolis of Mumbai. Exploring the two sites above should steer a better understanding of the roles that cultural heritage sites keep playing and why it is necessary to protect such sites.

The Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado is among the most notable cultural sites in Colorado deserving of efficient preservation. The site is known for its high concentration of ancestral Pueblo Indian dwellings. The dwellings were built from the 6th to the 12th century (National Park Service, 2023). The dwellings showcase the mastery of architectural skills in the Ancestral Puebloan culture. The structures are a representation of the 900 years of settlement among the Puebloans from c. 450 to 1300.
