The Federalist Party was the first political grouping to be founded in the United States. It advocated for a strong Central Government which was to have supreme authority in the Federal Governments. Such a Government was to be capable of settling its debts via a protective tariff to raise revenue. It encouraged inventions and established a Bank to support paper money and capitalism. The first law was signed by President Washington to jumpstart its policies. Some federalists agitated for war against the first republic of France and the protection of the interests of Britain in US.
The Democratic - Republican Party became the first opposition party in the US. It was spearheaded by Jefferson whose dogma differed from those of the Federalists. It gave rise to the current Democratic Party. It was against the creation of a strong Central Government but protection of the states’ rights with a strict interpretation of the constitution.
