George Percy: Feelings towards the Indians
My names are George Percy, born to the Earl of Northumberland in 1580. I was the youngest son in the family and had to spend most of my life in the military service. I joined many quests including the Dutch battle against Spanish occupation. According to American Journeys (2011), I joined the expedition quest in search of colonies in 1606 which eventually led me to settle in Virginia in 1607. I became President of the Virginia colony in 1609 after James Smith, the then President, left for England after a severe injury. Apparently I fell sickly most of the time in life, possibly from Asthma and thus, I was unable to execute my duties as president, which I gladly handed over to Sir Thomas Gate in 1610.
I considered my Perception of the Indians and their way of life as mixed but nonetheless, passionate. I did acknowledge the fact that in the first months after our arrival, the harsh climatic conditions forced us to depend entirely on the Northern Indian tribes, who supplied us with food, mainly corn. Generally, my feelings were those of disgust at the mode of dressing and body paint evident in the Indians. I also seemed not to be in agreement with their way of food preparation. In a raid in 1610 against Powhatan (an Indian settlement), I ensured that every Indian was killed albeit in very painful and savage ways, including the women and Children.
Considering the above description of my feelings towards the Indians, it is evident that I did not in any way or manner, have positive views about them. As stated by American Journeys (2011), my feelings and negativity towards the Indians were not only personal, but also influenced by external factors.
