Introduction
A study, which stands as a historical example of violating human subjects, is the Tuskegee Syphilis Study that took place in Macon County, Alabama, from 1932 to 1972 (Zbar, 2022). The study was sponsored by the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) in collaboration with the Tuskegee Institute and was conducted in order to study the natural progress of untreated syphilis in individuals. However, this research was deeply flawed starting from the methodology to its ethical code of conducts.
What did the researchers seek to Learn?
Syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease and spread through sexual contact has no proven treatment plan in 1932. As such, there were measures to identify the disease patterns and come up with desirable treatment plan. This called for study of its occurrence and with syphilis having a prevalence rate among black African Americans, they were the preferred study population. The study was dubbed, “Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male” and during participants selection, participants were informed that they were being given free treatment for “bad blood” which referred to treatment of a wide range of ailments such as anemia, syphilis, and fatigue among the locals (Zbar, 2022).
