Prospectus: The Role and Place of Religion in Ancient China
The draft and the final paper will seek to answer a number of questions in regards to ancient religion in China. An aspect that is common in the class readings is religion. The draft and the final paper, therefore, will seek to carry an in-depth investigation into the place and the role of religion in Ancient China. In this regards the question that the paper will seek to answer are the following.
1 What are the religions that shaped the history of China? Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism are the religions that characterize the Chinese history. However, what are the periods that these religions were prevalent? Who introduced them? How were they received? What was their popularity? As seen, there are a number of questions regarding the religions in the Chinese history that the paper will seek to answer.
2 What are the gods that ancient Chinese prayed to or worshipped? What were the worship practices to these gods? The paper will also seek to find the gods that characterized the Chinese religion. The way they worship their gods will also a major focus of the paper. In one of the readings, Ch’oe Pu’s Diary, religion played a big role. In the diary, along with soldiers in the boat, he believed that “Heaven” will not let them die. While the soldiers believed that they would die due to the conditions of the sea, he was the only one who believed that “Heaven” would allow him to go mourn his father (Meskill 32). Therefore, it is deducible that he worshiped “Heaven”. It is evident that religion was a part of Chinese history and the paper will seek to out more about this.
3 What was the role that religion played in ancient China? This is another question that the draft and the final paper will seek to answer. As seen above, it was the belief of Ch’oe Pu that Heaven would allow him to go and mourn his father. In Andrade’s Lost Colony, religion is shown to have played a part in the encounter between Koxinga and the Dutch. Both the Chinese and the Dutch believed that the happenings of the sea such as storms, currents, and winds were being controlled by a supreme being. The supreme being was referred to by the Chinese as Heaven. Andrade shows that to a great extent the place of religion in the Chinese society. A deeper dig into literature will unearth more information about the role played by religion in ancient society.
Therefore, these are the questions that the draft and the final paper will seek to address.
The questions above will be answered through an examination of relevant pieces of literature. One of them will be the book by Roberts that examines Chinese mythology. The sources that will be used to write the paper will have relevant information about the Chinese religion and their gods. More sources will be listed in the reference list.
