Food and its Presentation in The Satyricon
In Arbiter’s The Satyricon, Volume 2, the narrator was describing the events that occurred during The Dinner of Trimalcho. There were no graphical representations of the food described in the chapters involved in the reading, but the textual descriptions were able to help paint a picture as to how the food were presented to the guests and to the host. Trimalcho was a peculiar being that seemed to be arrogant and boastful. The food he had his servants serve were exotic and complicated, and they were adorned with various items that communicate to lookers how rich Trimalcho is. An example from Chapter 31 are foods or appetizers like black and white olives, dormice, hot sausages, damson plums, and pomegranate seeds presented with a Corinthian bronze donkey statue (Arbiter, 2004). In the first place, the Corinthian bronze donkey bearing the food is already a symbol of wealth. The food, on their own, also symbolized the same thing. Black olives were regarded as symbols for sophistications before, and even now, as in our current times, black olives are ingredients for expensive pasta dishes. Further, the white olives, which are the rarest olives, are part of the ensemble, as well as rare damson plums.
The guests all seemed to be both mesmerized and confused at the selection of foods. There are some that assume that the foods are great, even though they are foreign to them, like the peahen eggs with a chick that already formed inside. The narrator seemed to be under peer press...
