Though located and 13,000 kilometers away from Britain and only 483 kilometers from Argentine, Falkland Islands remain a territory of Great Britain to date. The last major historical event on the islands was Britain's recapture of the islands from Argentinian forces in 1982. With a territory of 12000 square kilometers, the British overseas territory has internal self-governance but rely on the United Kingdom for international policies and defense. Before the 1982 recapture, Argentinian forces had occupied the island taking the reigns from occupying British regiment. The military confrontation of 1982 lasted for ten weeks, with Britain emerging victorious. Britain's victory can be attributed to several factors that favored Britain, including but not limited to, superior technology, superior weapons, advanced international relations, and controlled media coverage of the war. This paper seeks to explore some of the factors that played an essential role in Britain's victory.
Brief History
The first recorded landing on the islands was by John Strong, an Englishman, in 1690, followed by the French in 1701 (White, 2012). The French established the first settlement on the island in 1964 by admiral Louis-Antoine de Bougainville. In early 1765, Britain took possession of West Falkland and established Port Egmont without realizing that the French were present on the island. In 1770, Spain took control of the island after it outnumbered British forces. The British returned in 1833, and by 1840, they had established it as a formal colony with the support of the United States of America (Hewer, 2013). Over the years, before the 1982 confrontation, Argentine has tried to reclaim the island through both diplomacy and military action. Despite the seemingly good international relations between Britain and Argentina, beneath is the big question of who should rightfully own the island. Britain recaptured the island not only to protect its foreign interests but also to protect the inhabitants of the island. They are mostly of British origin and prefer to be ruled by the queen. Britain's victory can be attributed to several key factors.
