Winter 2020
Short Paper #5

Using David Fromkin’s Europe’s Last Summer as your guide, please respond to one of the following two questions in an argumentative essay of 500-750 words.  Your paper is due in hard copy at 9 AM on the last day of class, March 12, 2020.

1.  Imagine that you were a European diplomat at any time between 1848 and August 4, 1914.  What specific action or actions would you have taken sufficient to prevent World War I from breaking out?  In your answer, be sure to specify which country you are representing; you may use the first person as long as your argument is strong.

2.  Evaluate either the two theses about prewar politics given in lecture – the rise of violent practices among political “outsiders” and the “persistence of the Old Regime” – in light of Fromkin’s account of the outbreak of World War I.

Introduction
World War 1 was one of the most considerable turmoil on earth. The war was inevitable since it involved various countries, grouped into two. The central powers comprised of Austria, Germany, Hungary, Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. The opposite side included France, Italy, Japan, the United States, Great Britain, Russia, Romania, the allied powers. Each team had an overwhelming interest to surmount the other, which sparked wars. Unfortunately, when fights broke, even supporters of these sides combined and backed up their front liners, and that is why many countries participated in the struggle. Much as was inevitable, if I were diplomat in Europe, especially, Germany, I would curb the war through advising Germany, penalizing soldiers for illicit killing, and aiding Austria to smash Serbia
Counseling Germany
Counseling Germany even during the war would help combat the war. To spark the war, Germany immediately attacked France with the intent to conquer her from the western part. Besides, they expected to smash the Russian army that inhabited France in the East (Fromkin, 2007). Eventually, the war broke between these countries and bolstered by other supporting countries. France, being a country that was partially under Russian control, it would be right for Germany to search for a free country than any conquered States because it would lead to a conflict of interests. In this way, Russia, a German rival, attacked them because they wanted to exploit the potential resources in France and never wanted to quit. In regards to the above, as a European Diplomat, I would audibly advise Germany to cease from persistently attacking France since they (Germans) were the inventors of this war. Therefore, advising Germany to desist from reacting to France’s attacks would help modify the mode of the war.
Penalizing German Army Generals
Major reports indicate that Germany was the central brain behind World War 1. Germany's aggressiveness, especially the harshness of their soldiers, sparked the fight. In this case, the soldiers intruded and smashed the city of Liege, using some destructive weapons, which caused unspeakable death rates in those ar...
