The major aspects of Confucianism that Ogyu Sorai criticized is social order and social relationships. Sorai argued that social order was not naturally occurring but rather was created by humans throughout history. For example, people develop rules that guide them as opposed to these rules occurring naturally (Chapter 14, 2014). Sorai argued that it was important for laws to be in place and as long as people obeyed them, the government has no right to interfere. Sorai believed in the essence of making individuals self-sufficient. As opposed to gaining power through hereditary means, he proposed the idea of merit and nurturing talents. In this way, he believed that people could work and become what they wanted as opposed to assuming that these things come to a person naturally.
